Rum
The Last Drop, 1976
The Last Drop distillery has made its name from seeking out small parcels of incredibly rare spirits. This release, a cask of Jamaican rum distilled in 1976, was matured partly in the Caribbean and partly in Liverpool. The result is a rum of incredible complexity, with ginger cake, blood orange, banana cake and seemingly the entire confectionery section of Fortnum & Mason on the nose. The palate has sweet mango, aged steak from the famous Jamaican rum funk, Oxford marmalade on toast, and Jaffa Cakes. Orange sherbet with liquorice starts a finish that goes on for days, with cigar tobacco and Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Finally, a Campari note with leather and liquorice leaves you wanting more. Elegantly beautiful yet still utterly funky in old age.
