Cultivated almost exclusively in the Salice Salentino area of Puglia, Susumaniello is a little-known and very rare Italian varietal that is a natural cross between a red table grape and the white wine varietal, Garganega. More usually blended with Negroamaro in rich, hearty reds, this Susumaniello has instead been hand-harvested to produce a delicate, petal-pink rosé with appealing notes of redcurrant, freshly cut red apples and wild strawberry. The light-touch of winemaker Alessandro Michelon gives a fresh, crisp and very pretty rosé that would be an ideal accompaniment to summer salads or pre-dinner nibbles.
