Red wine
Peter Michael Winery, Les Pavots 2012
A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Inky and opaque, though still holding its youthful garnet hue, this wine smells of chocolate-covered raisins and roasted figs. Rich flavours of raisins, chocolate, prunes and dried herbs are enclosed by muscular tannins that grip the palate as notes of cedar and liquorice linger on the finish. Ripe and rich and starting to fade, this is a vintage for drinking sooner rather than later. A very mild-to-warm year with a sunny autumn provided plenty of latitude for picking, allowing for longer hang-times, which this wine seems to have received, perhaps to the detriment of its overall acid balance. Named the number-one wine of the year by Wine Spectator in 2015, but it’s now time to drink this one.
