The second wine from Château Poujeaux, in Moulis-en-Médoc just inland of its more famous neighbour Margaux, comes from an excellent vintage for reds. Majority Merlot, despite being from the Left Bank, there’s a gorgeous nose of black fruit, damson jelly, sweet spice, tobacco leaf and fragrant herbs; the palate offers lovely complexity, and there’s some gentle grip and a faintly gamey finish. A classy cuvée, it’s good value and calls for roast rib of beef.
