Château Caronne Ste Gemme, Haut-Médoc 2021

Just as St-Emilion’s Château Magdelaine ended up in Belair Monange, and Margaux’s Pontac Lynch ended up in Issan, so it seems Caronne Ste Gemme might be the next well-loved name to disappear. The estate was recently sold by the Nony family to Bernard Magrez, and is likely to be included in his Médoc château La Tour Carnet next year. That makes it one to buy in 2021, as a nod to what has been one of the best value wines in the Haut-Médoc appellation (with around 35% of its production going into the UK market). You’ll find the dark fruits that are generally a little hard to locate in this vintage, not exuberant but measured, with bilberry, cassis bud, touches of earthy smoky oak, all carefully extracted and balanced. A little old school and rustic, but with clear skill in winemaking on display, and mouthwateringly sappy tannins on the finish. Lovely stuff from François Nony.
