Nose: Delicately ashy, the remains of a charcoal fire, with bitter dark chocolate and a sweet herbal quality in spearmint and basil leaves.
Palate: Soft and dirty, all bonfire smoke, hearth ash and freshly laid tar. The flavours are meaty, earthy, briny and a little bitter, like rich dark chocolate, molasses and coffee grounds, but with a peppery, minty lift.
Finish: Hot tar, iron filings and salted dark chocolate.
Conclusion: Lagavulin yet again demonstrating its extraordinary power to transport its drinkers to Islay’s shores.
