Ata Rangi, Kotinga Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

RRP TBC

This wine was aged mostly in a foudre (large capacity oak) named “Raymond”. All the red fermenters and some pieces of equipment in the winery are given names (the vibrating hopper is “John Shaker” after New Zealand wine writer John Saker). Raymond is named after another Kiwi wine writer: the late Raymond Chan. The foudre was used to impart less tannin to a wine from a generally quite tannin-prone site. The wine itself is herbal and spicy with some raspberry leaf and pot-pourri notes. A lovely palate ending with plum and cherry compote along an acid and tannin line that seems to run from start to finish. Quite a foursquare wine but it’s singularly delicious. The tannins do dry this out a bit at the end but it will be fascinating to watch this age.
