Maugeri, Contrada Volpare Etna Rosato 2021
- Tasted by
- Cristina Mercuri
Intuition led Carla Maugeri, together with her father and sisters, to a very old vineyard in Milo, Contrada Volpare, on the south-eastern slope of the volcano, where they would rebuild the ancient terraces with dry stone walls and renovate the land. Today Maugeri produces whites and a rosé from indigenous vines with a super-premium positioning. Her wines reflect her personality: controlled, precise, assertive and deep. The rosé has a delicate pale colour, plus a nose of peach and dog rose with a slight iodine note. The palate shows ripe but never exuberant fruit, giving additional impetus to the always-vibrant acidity. The wood is applied carefully, together with the use of lees, helping to encourage a reductive style and giving precision to the fruit in balance with a layered texture. A beautiful, concentrated wine that needs time in the (thankfully, dark) bottle to develop.
