Passopisciaro, Contrada S 2010
- Tasted by
- Cristina Mercuri
Sciaranuova is one of the oldest sites of eruption (known as ‘sciare’ in Sicilian) on the northern slope of Etna (formed around 400 years ago, therefore soils are still quite unfertile). Here, Passopisciaro owns a small vineyard of Nerello Mascalese. The wine is produced with the same techniques (aged in large wooden vessles) that Passopisciaro applies for its other single-vineyard expressions from different Etna contrade. In this way, the focus is deeply on terroir expression. The comparison with Burgundy is an easy one to make, with Sciaranuova bringing the velvety grace of Volnay village to mind. The palate is very subtle with rose and violet. Lively acidity and delicate tannins define this elegant drink. 2010 is a top vintage: those who waited can now enjoy its full grace and refinement.
