Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild, 2009

RRP £808

The Lafite 2009 is perhaps the wine most emblematic of the fine wine market bubble, due to its China-driven, meteoric rise and subsequent dramatic fall. The wine itself, though, is far from dramatic. Reticent on the nose, as though testing you out, your perseverance with it. Do you want to get past its defences? This bouquet is subtle, teasing, with animal savouriness. Beautifully poised, far-reaching blue-blooded fruit deftly slips across the tongue. Lafite doesn’t show off; it doesn’t throw it in your face. It waits for you to notice it. This is delicate and even pretty towards the back of the palate, with a stony cacao finish.
