Weingut Tschermonegg

At 600 metres above sea level, where the South Styrian Wine Route climbs to its highest point, the Tschermonegg winery occupies a place between sky and slope. From here, the panorama unfolds across terraced vineyards that fall away sharply towards the south, where Mediterranean warmth meets Illyrian air. The steepness is not incidental. For five generations, this family has worked these gradients by hand, coaxing elegance from limestone and slate, minerality from altitude, and precision from the interplay of warm days and cool nights.

The Tschermonegg family cultivates around 33 hectares along the famous South Styrian Wine Road, where steep vineyards have shaped their lives and their work for generations. Together with a dedicated team, they bring experience, tradition and modern approaches into careful alignment. Sustainability sits at the centre of everything they do, from the treatment of the vines to meticulous, hands-on work in the cellar. The goal is to create wines that reflect the character of their homeland whilst earning recognition far beyond it.

For the family, winemaking is the most beautiful way to unite nature and craftsmanship. Each year brings new challenges and opportunities to express the uniqueness of the vintage. Their greatest joy comes when they feel their wines are telling stories, of the steep vineyards, the climate and the people who accompany them. Wine creates encounters, connects cultures and conveys a sense of home. These moments inspire them anew every day.

The wines are deeply rooted in their terroir. Varied soils at altitude, combined with different slope orientations and inclinations, form the basis for wines that are aromatic, expressive and precisely vinified. In the cellar, the family intervenes with purpose and sensitivity, using pure cultured yeasts to guide aromas clearly and precisely, highlighting the typicity of each grape variety. In this way, they combine authenticity with an unmistakable style. The result is wines that embody the essence of the Mediterranean and Illyrian region, regularly impressing at national and international tastings.

As one of the first wineries in Styria and Austria to be certified according to sustainability criteria, Tschermonegg bears responsibility for nature and the environment in every step of the production process. The pressing and cellar facilities are hidden in the hillside, designed to conserve resources. With Franz-Josef, the elder of the two sons, in wine production and Lorenz, the younger, in the wine tavern and hotel area, the next generation is already actively involved. With fresh ideas, a clear vision and responsible entrepreneurship, they are leading the winery into a sustainable future, true to the family tradition that has been lived with passion for five generations.
