Perdeberg

In 1941, wine farmers of the Paardeberg region grew dissatisfied with the low prices they were getting for their premium-quality grapes. Jan Rossouw, an astute local farmer, suggested they begin producing their own wine. The first grapes were manually pressed the following year, and Perdeberg Cellar was born. Today, tucked at the foot of the Paardeberg Mountain in the fertile Agter-Paarl area between Malmesbury and Durbanville, the cellar has been crafting wines of integrity and character for more than eight decades.

The largely dry-farmed vineyards, spanning over 3,000 hectares, yield small, flavour-intense berries that capture the soul of this rugged land. Most vines are unirrigated and untrellised, producing a very low long-term average of just 7.8 tons per hectare. The structure and complexity in these smaller dryland berries bring intense colour, added body and exceptional flavour. The soils, consisting mainly of decomposed granite with shale, schist and clay, are complemented by four different microclimates. This natural variation in weather, along with soil, drainage and altitude from vineyard to vineyard, enables the production of a wide range of wines with distinct qualities and character, all within the same area.

Known worldwide as ‘The Home of Chenin Blanc’, Perdeberg crafts over nine distinctive styles of the variety, from vibrant young wines to elegant Old Vine expressions, and even a celebrated Cap Classique. The Agter-Paarl is particularly famous for its top Chenin Blanc production, with numerous award-winning wines over many years. But the cellar is always evolving, exploring climate-resilient cultivars like Grenache Blanc and Grenache Noir, embracing vegan-friendly practices, championing Fairtrade and WIETA standards, and farming sustainably for future generations.

For the Perdeberg team, winemaking is about curiosity, patience and joy. Each vineyard has a personality, shaped by sun, soil and season, and their job is to listen and let those stories shine, According to the team, the “greatest satisfaction comes when someone tastes Perdeberg in the wine – the resilience of the vines, the spirit of the team and the authenticity of a place they’re proud to call home.”

The passionate team, together with Fairtrade-accredited growers, shares a belief in doing things right: nurturing Old Vines, farming sustainably, mentoring young talent and caring for the land that sustains them. What makes Perdeberg unique is the harmony of tradition and progress – wines that honour heritage, speak honestly of place and reflect the passion of the people behind them.
